JAZZ IMPROVISATION WORKSHOP

Saturday's 11am-1pm

The focus of this class is to learn typical Jazz song structures, like Blues and Rhythm Changes and the melodies built on them, as a basis for building Jazz vocabulary to create your own improvisations. This simple approach to taking common melodic ideas and using it as a springboard for improvisation is an effective way of opening up the concept of Jazz improvisation, even for those who have little to no experience or find it difficult to do. Most of the class time is spent playing and exploring these concepts in a group setting to not only explore one's individual improvising but also the ability to improvise in a group context, so typical of the professional Jazz performance experience.

All instruments welcome. Drums, piano, amps and microphones are provided. You just need your instrument!!

Please feel free to contact me with questions or to get more info.

Every Saturday 11-1pm unless otherwise noted.

JAZZ STANDARDS ENSEMBLE

Monday's 7:30-9:30

The focus of this class is in learning the "standard" jazz repertoire, as well as to gain a deeper understanding of the roots of these compositions. Thees classes are performance based and are meant to help the student improve their ability to create their own improvisations on this material as well as to gain the interaction experience of a professional jazz ensemble, while examining the distinctions between the vocal/song and jazz/instrumental traditions.

All instruments welcome. Drums, piano, amps and microphones are provided. You just need your instrument!!

Please feel free to contact me with questions or to get more info.

Every Monday 7:30-9:30  unless otherwise noted.

ART OF THE JAM SESSION

Sunday's 4-6pm

The focus of this class in essence is to recreate the NYC Jam session playing experience and explore all the typical encounters related to the typical “live” jam session environment. Consequently this class is structured a little different than the other more theme based or conceptual classes listed here, generally creating a class where more and different material is played in each class. While there is still an evolution of the learning experience as the classes progress, it is based on developing the skills to navigate and function in the jam session “experience” itself. The material and musical concepts covered relate to the challenges and conventions of the public Jazz jam session which in turn help prepare students for that very experience.

All instruments welcome. Drums, piano, amps and microphones are provided. You just need your instrument!!

Please feel free to contact me with questions or to get more info.

Every Monday 7:30-9:30  unless otherwise noted.

CONTEMPORARY CONCEPTS ENSEMBLE

Thursday's 7:30-9:30

The focus of this class is to explore more contemporary playing styles and modern improvisational concepts, as well as to gain a deeper understanding of how the influential jazz artists and bands of the vernacular developed them. As this is primarily a performance based class, time is spent examining the roots and progressions of these playing concepts by working on traditional material and it's development into more contemporary styles through playing together as an ensemble. This class can cover topics which might include unusual or changing meter and advanced metric, harmonic or form concepts.  A solid foundation in basic jazz form structures, the jazz repertoire and rhythm would be very important for any student interested in gaining some real benefit from this class.

All instruments welcome. Drums, piano, amps and microphones are provided. You just need your instrument!!

Every Thursday 7:30-9:30  unless otherwise noted.

CLASS POLICY/PAYMENT

Class dates are decided together between all participating students and myself for each upcoming month pertaining to each class and afterwards confirmed by all. At that point they can be paid at a rate of $40 per class online using Paypal or Venmo, or at the first class in cash or check, for all the classes that were decided. After that point, if you can't make a class you can get a sub of your choice which gives you the opportunity to recoup all, or some, of your money as well as others the opportunity to try the class. The other option is to take part in any class you want to attend at the walk-in rate of $50 per class. If I can't make a class I will first try to reschedule the class in the same given week or, if that is not possible for all involved, the student can decide if they want credit for the following month or to issue a refund for what was paid for.

All classes can be paid though the Paypal link on the left
